A discussion is provided of the advanced features of Exalead and other advanced search facilities. Exalead is a search engine that is in beta and provides such functionality as sounds-like, approximate spelling, and proximity search, among others. Other competitors to Google, including Vivisimo and Ask Jeeves, provide clustering of search results to assist in narrowing the search. Some non-Google search engines are more effective at providing answers, rather than search results only, at the top of the results page. In addition, Google's linear presentation seems outdated. The user interface doesnt compare to some of the graphical tools available in other search engines, such as MSN's Search Builder, which provides sliders that allow the user to specify levels of importance for return of popular pages and whether or not matches have to be exact for all search terms, or if an approximate match will suffice. Yahoo! provides the Mindset tool, with which users indicate if the inquiry is more pertinent to shopping or research. The excellent Yahoo! SmartSort has been available to shoppers for two years, and such data visualization tools as Inxight, i2 Anacubis, and KartOO allow searching of results in new ways to find relationships that would not be determined from a plain linear information display. Information professionals, when they show clients the advanced features of a high-end online service or enterprise search tool, have to be conscious of the fact that they often have no basis of comparison, since they have been using outdated search technology.
