Title: UIMA and the Blogosphere

IBM plans to open source its Unstructured Information Management Architecture (UIMA) software development kit (SDK), and the decision to make the new search framework could be a boon to unstructured data retrieval, especially the 'blogosphere.' UIMA software offers a framework for coordination of many disparate text analyzers, each of which runs as a service that consumes and produces data in common formats. Applications are built by declaratively combining sets of analyzers. Through the use of many technologies, the analyzers sift through unstructured text seeking named entities and their inter-relationships. The analyzers tag the entities to allow structured search. Queries are eXtensible Markup Language (XML) elements that can nest entities inside relationships. UIMA is aware that people will not compose texts using semantic markup to earmark entities and relationships. It also assumes that semantic clues found on the public Web will not be available in the enterprise. The more machine analysis possible, the better the result, but there still needs to be more investigation into ways to extract undocumented semantic metadata (that known only to individuals). Two briefly described strategies will emerge: social tagging and microformats.
