The University of Manchester's Scamp-2 and BAE Systems Laser Guided Crawler robot are highlighted in a discussion of the power of vision chips for emulating eye and brain functions. Scamp is a SIMD current-mode analog-matrix processor that integrates an arithmetic logic unit, memory, control logic, and an input/output (I/O) circuit behind each pixel. The Scamp 3 vision chip could allow robots and automated inspection, surveillance and vehicle-guidance systems to have sight in a way similar to human sight. Processors are implemented with analog circuitry in which each analog processor is programmable to allow true single-instruction multiple data operations to be done as an image is acquired. Current-mode logic is used throughout the pixel-processor design. A multiplier, flag register, and six general purpose registers form the core of the analog processor. Photodetector circuitry, I/O and four communication registers are deployed in current-mode logic to deal with neighboring pixels. Piotr Dudek says Scamp-2 will be the eyes for an intelligent robotic system that can react to its environment and correct itself without manual intervention. The project is called Reverse-Engineering the Vertebrate Brain (Reverb), and the Scamp-3 will act as the eyes for a BAE Systems Plc platform to allow robots to respond to unique events in a human-like manner. BA3E systems plans to use the technology in its laser-guided Crawler robot, which is capable of autonomously machining and inspecting high-precision aircraft parts.
