New digital imaging programs from Adobe and Microsoft give users more image management options. Adobe Photoshop Elements 3 integrates two programs: Photoshop Album has become the Elements Organizer, and Photoshop Elements is now the Elements 3 Editor. Organizer functions include Photo Review, displaying a full-screen slideshow with transitions and music; Fast Find, calling up images with a single command; Date View that organizes photos by days or events; and Collections, creating virtual albums that can serve as staging areas for further editing. The Elements 3 Editor provides several editorial tools: Smart Fix, permitting manipulation of lighting levels, color, and contrast; Spot Healing Brush, removing objects or flaws such as blemishes or scratches; and Photo Filters, simulating effects such as adjustment layers. Adobe has been working on this new release for three years and has created several value-added features such as Cookie Cutters for cropping photos into preset shapes, One-Click Red-Eye Fix to swiftly perform a standard operation, and Filter Gallery that provides various levels of photo enhancement. Microsoft Digital Image Suite 10 combines image editing tools with a digital image library. The latter can help users mark photos with tags for later action, including 'to share,' 'for review,' and 'needs touchup.' New image editing tools include levels and curves that change colors and exposure, panoramic stitching that creates a single photo from multiple images, as well as a color and saturation toolset.
