Title: IBM Sings Harmony With Apache

IBM announced plans in July 2005 to develop an open-source J2SE 5 platform under Apache's licensing terms. The project has been titled Harmony by Apache, apparently without any conscious sense of irony, and is touted as yielding a class library and a virtual machine allowing runtime components to be shared by independent implementations. The timing of this plan seems to labor under additional strain given the June 2005 announcement made jointly by Sun and IBM that their relationship is improving. IBM continues, at least officially, to oppose the idea of licensing Java from Sun; to make things more interesting, Sun claims IBM has signed an 11-year licensing agreement with Sun to use Java. Are there any cyber-psychotherapists in the house? The Apache Software Foundation has been managing Harmony since May but IBM's official blessing provides credulity some industry observers find comforting. Sun, perhaps wisely, chose to not comment directly on the Harmony enterprise, although at least one Sun executive has stated the J2SE 5.0 licensing rules were intentionally designed to attract open-source implementation. Whether the world needs a second J2SE platform awaits further discussion, but at least there appears to be no major obstacles as Apache and IBM totter off down the road of a mutual relationship.
