Job Definition Format (JDF) is becoming the markup language of choice in graphic arts applications. JDF is based on the XML file format that carries communications between designer and printer, automating workflow as it eliminates errors and increases production speed. Designers with JDF-enabled software prepare files for print production and then create a JDF including size, pagination, and other specifications. All this data is recast as a digital format and turned into a portable document file (PDF). Printers opening the file can load all job ticket information into the production system without any retyping or other manual input. Further, JDF's digital capabilities track cost estimates, scheduling, and any other essential information. Some industry observers see JDF as an information standard for communicating information across workflow platforms. As positive as this may sound, not all vendors have incorporated this technology. Approximately 80 products have some degree of JDF capability. Trueflow 3.0 from Screen USA is designed to manage production workflows. Included are Flatworker, an imposition solution, and Riteportal, which creates JDF from customer-entered information online. Xerox has FreeFlow Print Manager, enabling print devices to share one language while communicating print job instructions. Acrobat 7.0 Pro helps designers compile information that will be automatically formatted and sent to the printer along with the PDF. Whatever the package, JDF looks to be the next widely accepted graphics production standard.
