Antivirus software, firewalls, and other echelons of Internet security must be assumed as under constant attack. Old viruses can be repelled but never truly exterminated, worms keep searching for a system's weak points, wardrivers pillage unprotected networks, and phishers may have stolen millions of personal records. Here are some of the latest tools designed to plunder the innocent Web user. Wireless 'evil twin' hotspots are created by jamming connections to legal base stations, then sending traffic to various false sites or stealing information from legitimate sites with keystroke logging programs. Such attack modes currently remain theoretical, but targeting a hotspot such as an airport or other similar facilities with evil twins could have disastrous results. Security threats for instant messaging (IM) systems have increased 271% since 2004. Over 75 new worms and P2P viruses tailored for IM have appeared in 2005. The broadcasting of socialite Paris Hilton's Sidekick's contents proves how tempting wireless devices are to voracious hackers. The Cabir worm, first developed by security researchers to test Symbian OS-based mobile phones, has been mutated to target many other brands. Users need to take the same precautions with phones as they do with e-mail. Finally, identity theft is not ultimately foiled by password protection. Phishing e-mails have shown sharp increases of activity. Anyone using more advanced technology than paper cups and string is vulnerable to cyber-attack.
