Title: Xirrus Advances the WLAN

Xirrus XS-3900 Wireless LAN Array, a product that facilitates 802.11a/b/g deployment, gets excellent marks, especially for high capacity, excellent 802.11a coverage, and a well-designed management interface. However, XS-3900 Wireless LAN Array is priced at the high end, and 802.11b/g coverage is sketchy. No Power over Ethernet (PoE) support is provided. Xirrus approach to meeting enterprise Wireless LAN (WLAN) capacity needs is to integrate up to 16 access points, a wireless switch, and high-gain multisector directional antennas that increase capacity and coverage. During testing of a pre-release version of the XS-3900 Wireless LAN Array, operation was good and provided excellent coverage and good performance. Xirrus also offers scaled-back versions with four or eight radios for smaller locations or fewer users. A main appeal of the XS-3900 Wireless LAN Array is its single-device design and its ability to provide service across all non-overlapping channels of the 2.4GHz and 5GHz unlicensed radio bands. Four of the 16 integrated APs (IAPs) in the test unit had dual-mode 802.11a/b/g radios, and the rest could do only 802.11a. Xirrus varies antenna gain across the 2.4GHx and 5GHz bands in an attempt to provide almost comparable RF footprints while providing considerable overlap between adjacent cells to avoid RF coverage holes. Testers found that the array's 802.11a coverage was substantially higher than that of an Aironet 1200 AP and that the system avoided many of the 802.11 dead spots left by other products, while providing almost total coverage of the test environment. However, for 802.11b/g, many areas covered by the Cisco Aironet 1200 AP were not well covered by THE XS-3900.
