Title: Data Centers Move Front and Center into the Middleware Revolution

Data centers are increasingly becoming the most fertile ground for middleware. Currently, middleware and variations such as portals and application integration have been shown to significantly lower data center maintenance and staffing costs. Almost 40% of enterprise applications are connected to middleware, with as much as 60% planning to continue pursuing middleware solutions. Other applications include Web commerce integration and business-to-business e-commerce. Data centers have been hampered by incompatible systems for years, and middleware offers the most viable way of unifying enterprise information technology. Service-oriented architecture (SOA) and Web services, largely untested applications, nevertheless offer the potential for infinite integration and reusability, completely remaking how organizations create and manage data center applications and operations. SOA middleware neatly sidesteps the demand for helping employees develop expertise in new proprietary skill sets by permitting users to reuse existing systems. Some industry observers feel the average programmer can maintain no more than 25,000 lines of code a year, imposing a stringent limit on productivity. This is not an issue with middleware. Service-oriented middleware may take as long as another decade to produce development nirvana, but the portal to that paradise appears to be wide open.
