Online instruction aids have recently been developed for special-needs students. The Center for Applied Special Technology is helping college teachers learn how to create HTML pages complying with the World Wide Web Consortium's accessibility standards and Section 508. Assistive technology includes voice-recognition software and screen readers that make accessing online course materials easier for students with physical or learning disabilities and other challenges. Coursework has also been created for students with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Although this condition is not officially classified as a learning disability, students attempting to cope with it are significantly challenged when separating speech from ambient noise and processing its meaning. Online courses let such students progress at their own pace without traditional classroom distractions. Dyslexic students have difficulty decoding information and reading, a situation where a screen reader or audio book could provide crucial help. Text-to-speech and speech-to-text software, currently not widely available, are especially helpful in coping with assigned readings. Such assistive devices can help students with learning disabilities to better understand tasks, blind students to access Web pages, deaf students to contribute to class without needing sound, and those physically disabled to participate in chat sessions.
