Title: 'Tiger' invites developers in

Mac OS X 10.4, also called 'Tiger,' shows how serious Apple Computer Inc. is about offering developers and users improved tools to manipulate metadata. The Spotlight feature is the door to more than transparent, fast searching; it offers developers a rich query language capable of creating interfaces between the metadata system and application-specific data formats. Simply clicking the Spotlight icon at the upper right and entering a random phrase will produce few useful results. However, opening the TextEdit application, entering the same phrase into a new file and saving that file with an unrelated name will open the metadata store and import processes, visible on the Activity Monitor utility that displays all Active Processes. Clicking on the Spotlight icon at this point redisplays the previous request, but that file will be immediately returned without user intervention to perform further metadata maintenance. Users can build complex metadata queries by choosing the Find command in Apple's Finder desktop manager. Apple's Xcode 2.0 development workbench is part of the Tiger package, though it is not installed by default. Xcode supports visual class-modeling and data-modeling tools to help understand complicated applications, as well as object-oriented and 64-bit capabilities. This combination of Macintosh and UNIX workstation offers personalities many developers will enjoy exploiting.
