Intel Corp.'s latest demonstration of its WiMax wireless broadband technology in Las Vegas produced mixed reviews, defined by playwright George S. Kaufman as 'good, and lousy.' Four directional antennas utilized a demonstration board using the new Intel chip set based on the IEEE 802.16-2004 standard, but most of the hardware included pre-standard base stations provided by Alvarion Ltd. The WiMax reception, though occasionally uneven, clearly worked but simultaneously showed how portions of the technology remain nascent. Originally touted as a more powerful version of WiFi and a last-mile alternative for a land-based Internet connection, even WiMax boosters are taking the position that this technology may be more applicable for Third World countries than the U.S. Equipment manufacturers are at best mildly committed to providing hardware, motivating industry insiders to advise a cautious approach to WiMax technology. Intel has committed $300 million to a marketing campaign for WiFi and the Centrino chip set used in WiFi-enabled notebook computers, insisting this is identical to the WiMax usage model. Alas, WiMax is not WiFi, nor is it likely to be any time soon. While some observers see an IEEE standard combined with Intel's marketing determination as potentially creating WiMax success, others feel such systems as GPS currently offer more reliable alternatives.
