Many experts in embryonic stem cell (ESC) research comment on their views of the future of embryonic stem cell use. William Hurlbut, MD, consulting professor at Stanford University, and member of the President's Council on Bioethics points out that without National Institutes of Health (NIH) support for newly created ESC lines, progress in the important area of research will be acutely constrained. Hurlbut says ESC research has much potential, but the use of embryos is disturbing. The embryo's continuity makes it a concern of moral standing, in that the human being is a psycho-physical unity, with continuity from its initiation at fertilization to its natural death. When embryos are regarded as interchangeable entities, the future becomes too unclear. Hurlbut is working to find an answer with creative science in the form of altered nuclear transfer that would be based on genetic or epigenetic alterations that preempt the formation of embryonic organisms. Among others commenting are an investigator with The Burnham Institute, an associate professor of religious and social ethics at the University of Puget Sound, and a cell biologist.
