Planon Systems Solutions Inc's DocuPen R700 is a first-rate portable scanning device that offers rechargeable battery, optical pickup, light source, USB port and adequate nonvolatile memory to store up to 100 standard documents. The device connects easily to a PC or laptop at the USB port to facilitate the downloading of scanned images, and does a superb job of copying book pages, portions of maps, and oddly shaped documents. A single button enables the user to select either 100 or 200 dpi resolution. Unlike previous pen-style scanning devices, which functioned largely as a pen and read a single line at a time, this device is capable of sweeping across an entire page, and does equally well when charged with copying sections of maps or blueprints. Another strong feature is that the DocuPen R700 can drag and drop an image into a Word or Excel program, activating the optical character reader tool. The device comes with ScanSoft's PaperPort software, which is effective when it comes to giving a sharper resolution to scanned images. The scanning device is also extremely flexible, as it can scan a series of smaller images derived from business cards or receipts and deposit them on a single page, adding text or annotations as desired. One missing element would be the lack of an ability to meld together several scans into one larger image, but this is a small complaint when applied to an overall excellent product.
