IBM's DB2 Universal Database 8.2 wins high marks for its effective deployment of self-awareness technology. The application performs continuous scans of user database queries, detecting patterns. Once a pattern is detected, the database is able to reduce the time required to process the request by five to 10 seconds per file, which can add up to a significant saving of processing time. The product also has built-in self-healing capabilities that can handle such problems as High Availability Disaster Recovery log delay. At the same time, the system administrator performs a vital function by configuring for backup servers and developing rules in the form of script files that are triggered when specific conditions are observed. The easy-to-use interface makes it easy to hand-trigger a rollover or establish a script to perform the task. In most instances, users will not even be aware of the fact that a network function has been switched to a backup server. The program provides a preview of a more effective future for IT management, one in which the software and the system administrator work together to ensure a smoothly functioning network. The interface is somewhat demanding in this version, requiring the administrator to create a triggered script for every possible event.
