Enterprise mobility is a growing trend as companies ranging in focus from accounting and health care to environmental testing and professional services take advantage of improved wireless communications to deploy a range of mobile computing devices. The overall global mobility market is currently growing at a rate of 10 percent per year, and has increased from $16.5 billion in 2004 to a projected $24.1 billion by 2008. Devices will account for about half of this spending, with the remainder divided between services, software, and WLAN infrastructure installation and maintenance. Further, an increasing array of devices is reaching the market to specifically address the needs of such diverse occupations as oil field technicians, police officers, and visiting nurses. These devices include portable data terminals, laptops, personal digital assistants (PDAs), and handhelds. A new category of device is now being marketed, a more advanced version of the PDA called the enterprise digital assistant (EDA). These devices expand the small, lightweight form factor with such industrial-grade improvements as road-ready WLAN equipment, improved security, and more durable components.
