Startup D-Wave Systems plans to develop a quantum computer within the next three years, according to company officials. The D-Wave system will lack full functionality, and will be confined to the 'special-purpose' arena, but it will still incorporate quantum algorithms that resolve many of today's most difficult physical-simulation issues. The key to the D-Wave system is a technique called quantum tunneling, which enables particles to move from one area to another. The Canadian company is able to move aggressively in this arena due to the simplicity of its design, which relies on an analog chip constructed of low-temperature semiconductors. Though the chip must be cooled to -269 degrees Centigrade, it does not require the complicated mesh of lasers, vacuum pumps and other specialized equipment required by other quantum computers. The D-Wave system, while not powerful enough to effect advanced cryptographic solutions, is expected to perform complex mapping functions in a few seconds.
