The intelligent network is becoming the new paradigm for network managers seeking a network configuration that extends the analytical capacity of traditional networks. The application-fluent network knows what application is running, as well as the appropriate syntax and semantics of that application. The problem with current network intelligence applications, according to industry experts, is that they lack a coherent architecture, depending instead on a number of specialized devices that are aimed at particular network functions such as security and performance. The rapidly expanding deployment of XML technology and the rise of the service-oriented architecture (SOA) are expected to heighten network security concerns. Many vendors are working on translation devices that will speed the process of working with the verbose and inefficient XML technology, effecting an off load of XML processing, translation, and security tasks that would free large amounts of network computing power.
