Title: Unblock the data clog

Integration options must be weighed carefully before designing a data architecture, and a crucial element of this process involves selecting the appropriate data-integration method. Among the elements to be evaluated are the extract, transform and load tools that are deployed to extract data from a range of sources and load the data into a single database. Originally confined to larger organizations, this method is now widely used to create data warehouses. Enterprise information integration (EII) provides the appearance of a consolidated data repository through virtualization, while leaving datasets in their original location. This emerging market generated sales of $250 million in 2004, and major vendors such as IBM and BEA Systems have recently entered the EII market. Organizations that are geographically spread out make effective usage of database replication, which rapidly moves updated data between source and target systems. Web and data services and hardware-based integration are also emerging in the planning of some companies and organizations.
