The emerging international standard regulating the compression and decompression of images is called JPEG 2000. Many industry leading companies have already adopted this standard as an effective means of managing large collections of images. The standard also encompasses designs for secure military radio transmissions, predefined resampling at different scales, regional decoding, and the inclusion of the Geography Markup Language (GML) for geographic coordinates and object descriptions. The key benefit of the JPEG 2000 standard is that accomplishes strong image compression without a related degradation in image quality, making it an ideal solution for such power users as military transmission, medical imaging, animation, digital photography, remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS). JPEG 2000 relies on discrete wavelet transformation (DWT) algorithms, and is often capable of compression ratios as great as 200:1.
