Bob Muglia, senior VP for the Microsoft Windows Server Division, has said that the Longhorn server to be released in 2007 will emphasize such areas as system configuration, management, and health. Improvements in file and terminal services are under development, as are application enhancements. Microsoft has been developing a new error-reporting feature called Crimson, which will report on system health. Windows Server 2003 lacks clear models for definition of various health and transition points of a system as it move from normal operation to non-responsiveness. With Longhorn, users will get a health model for each service and role that defines many states and transition points. Microsoft will also build a set of services into Windows that would allow virtualization of operating system sessions. Intel and Advanced Micro Devices are also putting virtualization hardware into their chip sets in 2006. The virtualization technology will consist of two components: the foundational hypervisor software and a full virtualization stack on top. The emphasis in Microsoft Longhorn Beta 2 will be management and improvement of the user interface. The subsequent version of Windows code-named Microsoft Blackcomb will ship around 2010, and Microsoft is currently deciding on a feature set.
