A new generation of informatics software called experiment design automation (XDA) software is expected to provide laboratories with design tools powered by computational analytics and data management. These tools will bolster the speed and quality of experimentation by enabling scientists to improve the designs and faciltate the automation of experiments. Since current databases fail to meet XDA requirements, a third form of informatics is needed, one that effectively combines the reliability of databases and the portability and flexibility of documents. Teranode's Teranode Design Suite is a visual design application that represents design as a computational model encompassing data integration, data management, and analytics. Three modules represent the life cycle of the experiment: TDS Protocol Modeler, TDS Protocol Player, and TDS Biological Modeler. Another strong feature of the Biological Modeler is that biologists are able to incorporate their own analysis algorithms into the module.
