Title: Yeah, But Can You Search Audio?

As business organizations amass an increasing amount of information in audio and video formats, including radio and television broadcasts, conference calls, speeches, focus groups, training sessions and sales presentations, the task of speech analytics is becoming more important. There are two fundamental types of speech analytics, those that automate the process with speech-to-text, in which the audio is transcribed into text and then scanned for certain search terms, and phonetic search, where the searches are done directly on the audio. An effective speech analytics program must be able to scan through thousands of hours of material and return accurate results. The trade-off is that speech-to-text software can search faster than phonetic programs, but phonetic solutions can convert audio into searchable form fifty times faster than speech-to-text solutions. It is important that an organization perform actual tests of their audio and video material to ensure effectiveness on the part of the solutions they are evaluating.
