Title: E-mail near and far

Three leading email platforms, Microsoft Exchange, IBM's Lotus Notes and Novell's GroupWise 6.5 are compared for their ability to handle remote traffic. Each of these programs are accessible through Web browsers and support remote access for wireless devices, and the desktop client can be employed for remote applications, subject to security system clearance. IBM's Lotus Notes offers the tightest integration of the three programs, although it suffers from a lack of editing features and some of its security and replication features cannot be utilized via a Web client. Microsoft's Exchange Server 2003 is marred by a reduction in features as a user moves from the desktop client to the Web client. Novell's GroupWise 6.5 does an excellent job of providing support for remote applications, and makes it easy to access address book, calendar, inbox and tasks from any device with a Handheld Device Markup Language (HDML) microbrowser.
