The clinical trial process lies at the heart of the drug development and approval process that plays such a major contributory role in the development and release of new drugs from the pharmaceutical industry. The average cost of developing a new drug rose to $802 million in 2000. A major aspect of this high development cost is the overall screening of drugs. Astonishingly, only one of 5,000 drug candidates is finally approved and placed on the market. This clinical process remains a major drain on the profit margins of drug companies, and clinical trial management systems (CTMS) are providing a solution that may reduce development costs. Bayer AG and Novartis are among the early adopters of electronic data capture (EDC) technology, which enables patient data to be directly recorded via an electronic process. Two of the leading products on the market are Oracle's Clinical Remote Data Capture application and Phase Forward's Clintrial.
