Document protection software is designed to protect the vital information, including reports, contracts and new product ideas, that drives a business. In the current IT environment protecting such information is difficult since it may float around inside or outside the network in such forms as shared files and e-mails. Once termed digital rights management software, this technology is now called enterprise rights management by Microsoft. Adobe pioneered the concept with the release of its Acrobat 2.0 program in 1994, which enabled the user to attach rights and set restrictions on PDF files. Acrobat 4.0 added the public key infrastructure (PKI) technology that advanced data encryption capabilities. The current offering from Adobe is the LiveCycle Policy Server, a J2EE creation that serves a range of and operating systems. Authentica also offers its Active Rights Management platform, which manages the dispensation of rights to PDFs, Office files and e-mail platforms. A problem slowing adoption of this technology is that it continues to have proprietary limitations. Adobe's LiveCycle Policy Server, for example, only works with PDFs. Microsoft is planning development agreements that would serve to expand the reach of its e-mail and documents management capabilities.
