Creo CEO Amos Michelson announces that Eastman Kodak Co will acquire the company for $980 million. The plan, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2005, will benefit Creo customers as well as maximize the volume of the holdings of Creo shareholders. Creo executive Patrick DeRose notes that the synergies between the two companies are excellent, with Kodak contributing its strong brand recognition and Creo providing its expertise in plate equipment. The combined companies are expected to mount a serious challenge to current prepress industry heavyweights Agfa and Fuji. Kodak's newspaper equipment unit, Kodak Polychrome Graphics, has also signed several technology agreements with thermal computer-to-plate equipment vendors. The one area where the product lines of the two new partners may conflict is that of digital plates. On the other hand, there is little or no overlap when it comes to more lucrative computer-to-plate and workflow products.
