Nanoscale fabrication is a technology that holds the promise of creating a transformation of industrial society. Two promising areas of research are those that involve the next generation of semiconductor manufacturing and the utilization of nanocluster solutions for materials development. Chris Phoenix, research director at the Center for Responsible Nanotechnology in New York, is proposing the development of a desktop nanofabricaton system capable of building industrial components from the ground up while retaining programmable control over them. This new generation of fabricators is projected to be available on the market some time between 2010 and 2020. The missing element required to drive this emerging technology forward seems to be a nanoscale fabricator capable of creating other nanoscale fabricators. These copies could then develop copies of itself that would address a series of nanofabrication adjustments. At last, nanofabrication may turn out to be the more dynamic technology.
