Zantaz's Zantaz Enterprise Archive Solution 4.1, Waterford Technologies MailMeter Forensic, and EMC's EmailXtender 4.7 are reviewed e-mail arching systems. The editors choice is Zantaz Enterprise Archive Solution 4.1, which earns the highest marks for compliance support, administration features, administration interface, and records management interface. MailMeter Forensics gets the best marks for pricing and its user interface. Testers required real-time, active e-mail arching products that support Exchange and Domino and that allow enterprises to manage e-mail storage. The products also had to assist with compliance for retention requirements in the U.S. and to permit discovery and retrieval of messages. The archives have to provide access mechanisms for both compliance officers and users, and have to support retention policies and automatic content analysis. A key required ability is the aging of messages out of the archive according to retention policies. Metadata for each record must be supported in the message classification scheme, but the products also have to be able to classify messages without metadata. Testers asked for as-tested list pricing for 200 and 1,000 seats and for maintenance costs as a percentage of purchase price. Only MailMeter Forensic lacks rule-based, arching, mail stubbing, and attachment stubbing. MailMeter Forensic is also the only tested product that lacks storage support for EMC Centera.
