To deliver e-health services, the University of Pittsburgh is building an Internet infrastructure, integrating its legacy information systems, and standardizing most of its software on the Microsoft .NET platform. The University created an electronic records system and concentrated on automation and connectivity for the practices of over 500 affiliated physicians. A physical Web portal was built to assist clinicians and their staffs in getting acquainted with online services. The physicians also had sufficient time to modify workflows and processes to support Internet services. A spokesman for the University of Pittsburgh says the Internet is an excellent communication channel, but is also one of many, including phone and fax. The aim is to make healthcare a service culture, which requires a change in philosophy. The effort is one of many under way among health organizations to use the Internet in various ways that streamline healthcare delivery. These efforts are relatively recent and have followed a period of hesitancy following the dot-com crash. An example of a company that backed off and then ramped up its initiative is Family Practice of Winona. The practice is now interfacing clinical information systems with online applications to push information, including test results and lists of medications, to patients.
