All models, analysis, and designs in research and development (R&D) rely on a solid foundation in mathematics, but to most effectively use and control the power of math, usage of math techniques needs to be more consistent and must avoid hit and miss techniques. Advanced math software systems are available that have the power and usability to provide a successful framework for management of computations. Maple from Maplesoft is one of the most compelling examples of the genre. Systems such as Maple explicitly manage math information in ways that more closely mirror the work processes of people. As well as doing raw number processing and calculation, such math systems get rid of manipulation errors in formula derivations, maintain unit consistency, and allow researchers to capture math in well-documented, reusable forms. Such wide support for many engineering tasks results in a significant increase in the use of math software systems. When researchers and engineers are asked about the effects of math systems on technical work, they generally cite the ability of math systems to save time and reduce errors. An example is described for optimization in piano design.
