IBM's recent acquisitions, which are designed to round out IBM's software and services business, have been Equitant, Corio, SRD, KeyMRO, and Liberty Insurance. In 2004 alone, IBM spent over $2 billion on 14 acquisitions, all of which were for software and services. Analysts say IBM will continue or speed up its recent pace as corporate buyers seek more comprehensive systems that have fewer best-of-breed components. The most recent deals, as is usual with IBM, are not of larger companies, but instead are purchases of smaller, more focused companies with offerings needed. Larger deals have been the acquisitions of PwC Consulting and Rational Software. A consultant says IBM's big acquisitions are over, and that Big Blue is adding the specifics. IBM is sensibly looking for vendors available at reasonable or bargain prices. Equitant is an outsourcing services provider, and Corio is an application service provider. Equitant provides finance and administration services that were acquired to assist IBM in gaining revenues in the market for business performance transformation services, which combine software, consulting, and engineering assistance. Corio offers companies pay-as-you-go access to applications from such vendors as Ariba, E.piphany, Oracle, SAP, and Siebel Systems. IBM will acquire procurement services from KeyMRO and has announced a seven year deal to provide procurement services to Schneider Electric, Rhodia, and Thomson.
