Researchers at the University of Cadiz in Span have demonstrated that turbulence includes sinking velocity of phytoplankton. They initially thought that the random up and down motions would cancel themselves out, but they now know that isotropic turbulence does not keep them suspending, but makes the phytoplankton sink faster. They reached their conclusion after conducting multiple experiments on turbulence generators. They used various setups and generated random turbulence either with two submerged cylinders rotating in opposite directions or with a submerged mesh grid attached to a motor that oscillated it up and down. Speeds of the rotations and oscillations varied. The researchers used a machine vision system to image phytoplankton in turbulence created by a cylinder inside a cylinder. The results of the experiments show that particles heavier than seawater sank faster in turbulent conditions, while lighter particles rose faster. The implication is that gravitational forces, mass effects, pressure gradients, and viscous forces are at work on particles. The group will continue work with the technique used and other techniques that apply machine vision to biological oceanography as researchers work in the years ahead to develop new information on particle dynamics.
