United Airlines Easy Check-In, a kiosk-based application that can be used by electronic ticket customers to check themselves into airline flights, is also helping streamline operations and enforce security standards. Wireless technology from Antenna Software is used to manage service calls in real-time by a company supplying screening and explosive detection systems to some of the largest airports in the U.S. With the A3 Connector software on the back end, and the A3 Smart Client running on a Samsung's Pocket PC, field technicians can receive trouble tickets in the field, look up customer histories, and update event status through a wide-area wireless solution over the Verizon CDMA/1xRTT network. Lufthansa was an early user of Wi-Fi with its Airline IP and has made about a dozen planes Wi-Fi-enabled. Lufthansa expects to extend Wi-Fi to all 78 long-haul aircraft by Summer 2006. Other carriers, including Continental, United, and US Airways, offer Verizon's AirFone and JetConnect. United also uses Bullseye baggage scanners that track a bag from gate to plane and back to gate. The manual process presently uses handheld barcode scanners that communicate with a back end database via Wi-Fi. United is testing the next phase of the system, which will involve the use of radio frequency identification (RFID) tags attached to luggage. Goals for Wi-Fi include better customer satisfaction and increased revenues. For instance, America West has responded to a requirement by the USPS that mail be tracked as it travels through the system.
