Microsoft Windows x64 editions of Windows XP Professional and Windows Server 2003 allow organizations to obtain the most from their AMD64 and EM64T devices. Sites running Windows on servers powered by Advanced Micro Devices (AMD's) Opteron and Athlon 64 chips or Intel 64T -enabled Xeon and Pentium IV to start testing and planning to move to Windows x64. This is particularly advisable where applications running are memory-intensive. Testing of Windows XP Professional x64 was conducted on a Hewlett-Packard (HP) xw9300 workstation with dual AMD Opteron processors. No driver for the machine on-board NIC was found, but an Intel PCI NIC was tried and worked well. The only Windows x64 drivers available on the HP Web site for the system tested were for the Nvidia Graphics adapter. Microsoft's two new operating systems (OSs) differ from their 32-bit cousins only in Windows x64's ability to manage multiple architecture complexity through the ability to keep separate locations for 32-bit and 64-bit program files and libraries and by presenting separate registry views. The task manager in Windows x64 also shows whether applications running are 32-bit or 64-bit versions. The primary deliverable of 64-bit is a substantial increase in the amount of memory the system can use (up to 1TB RAM for Windows server 2003 Data Center x64 Edition and up to 128GB of physical RAM for Windows XP Professional x64 Edition). Windows components that are new for 64-bit in the releases include Windows Firewall and Security Center, support for DVD video playback, Windows Messenger, Remote Assistance, Power Manager, System Restore, and Bluetooth.
