A buyers guide to variable data printing (VDP) products highlights, among other products, Objectif Lune's PlanetPress Software, the Pageflex division of Bitstream's Pageflex Persona, and Meadows Publishing Solutions DesignMerge. The market is diverse, and the industry is intent on reaching standards-based workflow as a way to support not only VDP but the entire digital document universe. Snapshots of some of many solutions available are provided. For instance, PlanetPress Software offloads the big work to the printer-any PostScript Level 2 printer for exactness. Documents can be stored at printer level when organizations must update their workflows within current infrastructure. Pageflex allows documents to flexibly process variable content in just one layout. With Pageflex, many data sources can be used in just one variable data project, including, for instance, data coming from a Web form, input from a customer relationship management (CRM) system, and content from a DAM system. A spokesman for Meadows says the company is currently planning to offer the same abilities as a plug-in for Adobe InDesign. PageFlex is the leading extension for QuarkXPress, with abilities that are unparalleled for cost. Only DesignMerge provides cross-platform VDP product support for QuarkXpress. PlanetPress Suite's 2004 release was a major upgrade through which the full product line was localized in five different languages and changed to process double-byte character sets and fonts.
