Bob Sutor, VP for standards and open source for IBM, describes IBMs vertical strategy for patent release and technology bundles. He says IBM will over time target all verticals that are now supported by the IBM PartnerWorld Industry Network. All industries are to benefit, says IBM, including banking, aerospace, telecommunication, and hospitality. Sutor states that as part of its new strategy, IBM will be required to open source parts of key components. Examples might be parts of IBM WebSphere and IBM MQ messaging technology. JPMorgan Chase & Company is also spearheading an effort to deliver an open source messaging middleware technology called AMQ that is similar to IBM MQ. Sutor says IBM knows of the plan and that a pragmatic approach will be taken in which few whole products will be made open source. An analyst says IBM wants to hasten commoditization of operating system (OS) and database functionality and to hone its edge in developing higher-level business innovations by making evolving technologies unofficial standards. User Ray Barker, CEO of rSmart Group, points out that his company gained advantages from IBM's release of 500 patents earlier in 2005. rSmart is a partner with IBM on the Sakai Project, which is an open source software development effort in which about six dozen institutions, primarily universities, are involved.
