GuruNet, the provider of the Answers.com service, is improving the service's information comprehensiveness and ease of use. GuruNet, instead of charging fees and narrowing its user base, has made Answers.com a free, ad-supported service. CEO Bob Rosenschein of GuruNet says Answers.com is a one-stop resource of information on over a million topics. The topics came from a database of 100 or more reference sources, including dictionaries, thesauri, specialized glossaries, encyclopedias, atlases, magazines, and others. The user can go the Web site and type in a search term or alternatively download the free 1-Click Answers program to use on a PC or Macintosh. The program examines the search term in context. Answers.com is not a competitor to search engines of reference sites, which return links that must be clicked through to obtain information. Answers.com is more like an almanac site or an encyclopedia site. Answers.com is for the average Internet user, who may be a business person, student, teacher, professional, or homemaker.
