Dell's Latitude D610, a new Sonoma-enabled laptop, blends portability, good performance and battery life, and attractive features, including four Universal Serial Bus (USB) ports and a full-size keyboard. Rated very good, the economically priced D610 weighs 4.67 pounds and includes Intel Centrino mobile architecture (code-named Sonoma) with an Intel 915 chip set that supports PCI Express. The Centrino platform also includes the Pentium Processor and Intel's newest wireless and graphics solutions. The Latitude D610 was tested with a 1.6GHz 730 processor, 512MB of 400MHz DDR2 SDRAM, and a 40GB hard drive that spins at a rate of 5,400rmp. The laptop has a 14.1-inch XGA 1,400x1,050-pixel display with a 130-degree viewing angle. Included is an ATI Technologies Mobility Radeon X300 graphics card with 64MB memory. The evaluated system includes an Intel Pro/Wireless 2200GB networking card and Bluetooth 2.0, and an Intel Pro/Wireless 2915ABC card is also available optionally. As compared with the IBM T42 for CPU, chip set, memory, graphics, hard drive, and operating system (OS), the Latitude D610 is better than the earlier Dell D600 but equivalent to the IBM previous-generation T42. Testers say organizations will probably have to pay $1,600 per Latitude D610 to get the performance and hard drive capacity they need.
