Orbital Sciences has implemented a Linux-based computing architecture that uses Linux Networx in a system based on Fluent's namesake product. To speed completion of jobs 30 times over, Orbital uses computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software from Fluent to simulate many fluid motion factors in or around its launch vehicles. Orbital Science chose Linux because it is known to provide optimal performance for CFD applications. The system had to be economical and linearly scalable with more CPUs and capable of expanding with the company as computational demands rose. Linux Networx was chosen as the cluster vendor because it understands the CFD and aerospace industry and has experience with Fluent software and deployment of Fluent-based clusters. Another reason was Linux Networx's impressive price/performance ratio. The Evolocity CFD cluster works very well in Orbital's environment because it came pre-loaded with Fluent and optimized for CFD applications, and because the hardware is designed for maximum availability. Active Cooling technology keeps circuitry cool for the most compute-heavy processes. Since the optimized CFD cluster was deployed, Orbital has observed substantial performance enhancements and cost reductions. Orbital can run larger problems than in the past and more design variations on smaller cases.
