Ulead's Ulead MediaStudio Pro 7.0, the most recent release of the editing package, gets excellent marks. Six integrated components are included for capture, video editing, audio editing, CG graphics, video painting, and DVD authoring. The capture component supports batch capture and recapture, and the video editor provides tools for trimming, editing, and titling, along with real-time audio-mixing tools. Also provided is a library of filters, motion paths, and transitions. The audio editor has real-time audio filters. CG Infinity is a vector-based motion graphics generator, and Video Paint provides compositing and rotoscoping tools. Video Paint also allows users to paint over video. The DVD authoring tool in Ulead MediaStudio Pro 7.0 permits creation of scenario selection menus, navigation buttons, and intro videos. After installation of Ulead MediaStudio Pro 7.0, testers installed the HDV plug-in. The setup process was intricate, but, after setup, HDV deck control should be active and the user should see valid timecode. When HDV is played with the capture utility, video is seen, but audio is not heard. Testers ran into an unsolved problem with an interruption in the sending of HDV video to a file. The Ulead editor imported HDV clips captured with an i.LINK utility. The HDV capture utility is integrated with the nonlinear editing toolset. The code supporting the connection of an HDV camcorder with the computer seems weak. When some bugs have been worked out in a software update, Ulead will have a comprehensive HDV solution in Ulead MediaStudio Pro 7.0.
