A discussion of Apple Computer's Macintosh-based toolbars and search tools focuses on applications that run under the Macintosh OS X platform, and does not give attention to those that only work under the old Macintosh system 9.2. The Apple-provided Web service is the Sherlock application, which ships with every Mac and permits users to search the Internet through the use of About.com, Best Site 1st, Looksmart, Lycos, and Overture. With plug-ins, users can also search Google and the Google directory. Users can look up other sorts of information without using a Web browser. Watson is like Sherlock, but is from Karelia Software and is speedier and more versatile. Safari is Apple's browser and has a search box that sends research queries to Google. Users can also change the default to Yahoo! or any other search engine. However, changes to the Safari application must be made with an editor, a process that is described at macosx.hits.com. Another choice is to use an Applescript called Safari2Yahoo!. Other Mac-ready toolbars and other options highlighted are SafariKeywords, AcidSearch, Firefox, Google and Yahoo! bars, Firefox Toolbar from Ultra, Eureskter, StumbleUpon, Firefox from Clusty (a new metasearch engine), Mycroft (a search extension for Firefox), and Amazon A9, which is said by Amazon to work with Firefox on the Mac platform, but was problematic when tested. Various other small applications are described that permit Mac users to send their queries to selected engines, including SearchBar.
