Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Compute Cluster Edition is Microsoft's answer for high-performance computing and will be available in the second half of 2005. A spokesman for the Cornell Theory Center and its Computational Biology Service Unit says the unit chose Windows for its HPC requirements. David Lifka says the organization did not want to have to use a news group or pay extra for proprietary UNIX support. As long as computing capacity needs are met, says Lifka, scientists do not care much about the operating system (OS) used. He also says such intuitive development tools as Microsoft VisualStudio .NET are a plus because they are faster than other approaches, including Java and Common Gateway Interface (CGI). Optive Research worked with Microsoft to redesign its software on the Microsoft .NET platform and to make the software easier to use. For a lab scientist, says expert Bryan Koontz, a Windows application assists with ease of use. Microsoft's strategy is not complex and depends on Microsoft's ability to eliminate a performance problem so that it can sell Compute Cluster on the basis of such factors as total cost of ownership, application development support, the many Windows Server systems management tools, and integration with other Microsoft products.
