To allow soldiers to monitor FBCB2 (Force XXI Battle Command Brigade and Below) systems from Northrop Grumman, the 3rd Stryker Brigate adapted a wearable display system that was being deployed by Microvision at auto companies. Microvision developed a helmet-mounted device that creates a virtual, transparent computer screen in the user's line of vision. The system is called the Nomad Helmet Mounted Display and allows commanders to see their FBCB2 displays while surveying the battlefield. The display had to be useful while the soldier stood in the hatch of war vehicles. They wanted to be able to see past the information at the horizon, but to see the information in their field of view to monitor possible changes. Microvision provided 100 helmet displays and sent a group to Kuwait to integrate them with the FBCB2 systems of the brigade. Microvision is in talks with the U.S. Army to provide as many as 310 systems for the 1st Brigade of the 25th Infantry Division Stryker force. The Microvision technology uses a miniature light source and a microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) mirror in a helmet-mounted module. The two components create an image of the source computer screen in front of the eye of the user. Government agencies have shown substantial interest in Microvision technology for use by first responders, special forces, and field maintenance groups.
