The advantages of eXtensible Markup Language (XML) and Adobe Systems Forms Designer with Portable Document Format (PDF) for form processing are described by users in federal and state governments. The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) also uses a special version of Microsoft Office InfoPath electronic form design software in an OMB workflow system for processing XML-encoded business cases. InfoPath and new products from Adobe Systems can graft XML capabilities onto office software already present on most government computers. Such agencies as the IRS and Government Accountability Office use Adobe Portable Document Format on a steady basis to capture paper documents in secure electronic form. With LiveCycle, agencies can use PDF to create electronic forms. A spokesman for the Nevada State Welfare Division has been able to speed workflow, says a spokesman for the division. With the assistance of an integrator and IBM, the state of Nevada constructed a workflow system that uses Adobe Accelio Forms Designer to render PDFs that were exact reproductions of the dimension of the paper-based form documents. Caseworkers use Adobe Reader 6.01 to fill in a form, and the PDF reader also has such features as support for scripting languages and calculation of numbers entered into some fields. The form can automatically be routed to the next part, when used with Adobe's workflow server.
