Title: Just a Note to Say...Bloggers Find Location Enabling

WaveMarket's WaveIQ, Jim Spohrer's WorldBoard, the Swedish Institute of Computer Sciences' GeoNotes, and Natalia Marmasse's comMotion are highlighted global positioning system (GPS)-enabled tools that 'can provide location-aware messaging for specific mobile users, logging reminders, personal comments, travel information, and other data.' In the short term, WorldBoard is a proposed reality system for the planet and humans that eases development of inventive ways for associating information with places. In the short term, the aim is to permit users to post messages on any of the six faces of every cubic meter of space in which humans might go on earth. WorldBoard supports not only handwritten messages, but also changeable media-rich Web pages, audio messages, and stereoscopic 3D images. comMotion primarily a personal board, but location-based exchange of information between multiple users is a longer-term goal. User mobility is the focus, and comMotion attempts to filter a user accumulated information and to serve it up only in the relevant context. Software includes a location-learning agent that follows the user's often-visited locations and permits labeling of them. A defined location can have an associated to-do list, and audio or text reminders are delivered for further use at locations. WaveIQ is a commercial software suite with three blocks: WaveSpotter (a map interface for cellphone displays), WaveBlog (a hosted 'superblog' that serves as a multi-channel information clearinghouse), and WaveAlert (an infrastructure that permits wireless operators to notify positioning-ready customers when 'friends' enter or leave a defined area). Because current blogging over an Internet connection is free, the question remains whether location-based services can succeed as a paid model.
