Data synchronization will be the single most significant business improvement initiative since the Year 2000 problem, as many retail leaders are strongly urging or requiring suppliers to implement data synchronization. With data synchronization, a brand owner publishes product information to a global registry called UCCnet. Interested and authorized buy-side organizations can subscribe to and retrieve the information. The information is used to make internal systems current, and to keep them up-to-date, correct, and consistent with those of trading partners. Success is only possible if sell-side organizations are willing to put the needed procedures and controls in place to make sure that what is being published to UCCnet is an accurate reflection of the business information stored throughout the organization. However, many manufacturers implementing data synchronization have taken a brass tacks approach, in that they concentrate only on getting the data into the UCCnet, when they should have first cleansed the data in their internal systems. Also still needed are efforts to control and coordinate internal processes for management of the information. Those experienced with EC say that the next phase following the do it phases will be do it right, do it right or Ill penalize you,' and do it right or Ill find a replacement supplier that will.
