Nemetschek VectorWorks 11 mechanical design software gets excellent marks for its combination of mid-market pricing and an expanded list of useful abilities. Some features that are useful to mechanical engineers have been omitted, however, VectorWorks 11 was first published for the Macintosh, and the interface for the Windows version still has some Mac-like features. The set of 2D and 3D tools is good and includes the robust 2D mechanical feature for geometric and dimensional constraints. Many engineering calculators are available for figuring out sizes of elements. An internal database and spreadsheet are included for tracking non-graphic information. Parametric symbol features are increased with the addition of bearing lock nuts and Woodruff key components that can be parametrically created in 2D and 3D. Nemetschek has also integrated a simpler version of the provided beam calculator directly inside VectorWorks. The integrated, simpler version works effectively but does not permit users to add uniform and concentrated loads in the same analysis. The interface in VectorWorks 11 has been updated to make some modeling operations more interactive. For instance, uses can change the angle of a tapered shape by dragging an editing handle on the fly. However, testers did not like the fact that VectorWorks 11 has more tools buried in pop-out toolbars, and the customization features in the Workspace Editor command are not Windows-standard.
