Veritas Software Backup Exec Suite gets good marks, especially for usability, which is rated excellent. The focus is primarily on Windows (for replication and applications), so interoperability is rated fair. Capability, performance, manageability, scalability, and security are rated good. Backup Exec Suite combines Veritas SRM, replication, and backup technologies in a process-centered management platform. Each of the three tools requires its own management graphical user interface (GUI), but Smart Link technology permits IT managers to forward tasks to the correct tool and to monitor job status. Components, which are separately priced, include Backup Exec 109 backup software, Storage Exec 5.3, and Replication Exec. Implementation is straightforward, and reporting and management tools are good. A centralized management option is available. The Central Administration Server permits IT managers to manage Backup Exec implementations remotely from a single console. IT managers can track backup operations and swiftly change configuration as needed. Testers, for instance, could fail over a backup job from one server to another. Replication Exec 3.1 software is adept in speeding backup by creating a disk-to-disk-to-tape infrastructure in which performance degradation can be reduced on production servers.
