Nanosys IPO is one of the most closely monitored IPOs in the Silicon Valley in years, and could lead to billions in new investment, the start of a powerful industry, and a very substantial boost to American high technology. Nanotech has a strong future that is still out of reach, and caution is advised, since nanotechnology can be compared to the condition of e-commerce four years ago. Although nanotechnology has been widely touted, even by Forbes with a nanotechnology newsletter, the actuality is much more mundane. Nanotechnology can create ultrasmall and uniform shapes, form them into grids, and arrays for items like solar cells and LEDs, and tune some of the unusual quantum effects at this level to do such things as produce multicolored light. Although those are important achievements, they are far from being 'engines of creation, and there is little money to be had from nanotechnology currently. Among huge investments have been those of a relatively small group of venture capitalists, of corporations, and of the federal government. Currently and into the future, even if nanotechnology is the success it is predicted to be, the chances that a private investor can profit from nanotechnology for many years is tiny.
